Gearheart Broadband vs. Satellite
Gearheart Internet
- Ultra-Fasts Speeds – Fiber far outpaces satellite in both download and upload speeds—commonly offering multi‑hundreds of Mbps up to gigabit or multi‑gigabit rates, while satellite typically ranges from 25 to 150 Mbps. Fiber also supports symmetrical speeds, meaning equally fast uploads as downloads
- Low Latency – Fiber’s latency is dramatically lower than satellite’s. Fiber typically delivers round-trip latency around 15–40 ms, whereas geostationary satellite links can hit ~500–700 ms
- Superior Reliability – Fiber’s underground infrastructure offers consistent resilience. It’s not susceptible to weather, atmospheric interference, or signal degradation like satellite is (e.g., rain fade or moisture disruptions)
- Signal Interference – Fiber is immune to electromagnetic interference (EMI) and virtually unaffected by storms—unlike satellite services, which can be disrupted by rain, snow, or atmospheric condition
- Network Stability – Fiber provides reliable performance regardless of the number of users. In contrast, satellite services—like Starlink—can see performance degrade significantly in areas with many users sharing limited satellite
Satellite / Fixed Wireless
- High Latency (Lag) – Satellite signals must travel thousands of miles to orbit and back, which creates long delays (500–700 ms). This makes gaming, video calls, and other real-time applications frustrating.
- Slower Speeds – While newer providers like Starlink offer better performance than older systems, satellite speeds still average 25–150 Mbps, much lower than fiber’s multi-hundred Mbps or gigabit speeds.
- Asymmetrical Performance – Uploads are often much slower than downloads, which affects cloud backups, file sharing, and video conferencing.
- Network Congestion – Since bandwidth is shared among many users, peak-time usage can cause slowdowns, especially in rural areas where many rely on the same satellite beams.
- Network Congestion – Service can cut out due to obstructions (trees, buildings, terrain) or temporary satellite outages, leading to inconsistent connections.sometimes with additional fees for hardware or mobility
- Higher Costs – Satellite internet often comes with expensive equipment (dishes, modems), higher monthly fees, and sometimes costly installation compared to terrestrial broadband.
