Who is Gearheart Communications?

Gearheart Communications began in 1953 when the Gearheart family purchased the Roberts/Olga Telephone Company, which served just 72 customers using crank telephones. From those early days, the company has grown into a leading regional communications provider, now serving more than 40,000 subscribers across parts of three states and six counties in Kentucky, supported by over 165 employees.

Coalfields Telephone & Broadband provides reliable landline telephone and DSL services to more than 7,000 customers throughout Pike and Floyd counties in Kentucky.

Founded in 1965, Inter Mountain Cable serves approximately 25,000 households across six counties in Kentucky, as well as Mingo County, West Virginia, and Buchanan County, Virginia. Inter Mountain Cable also operates Coalfields Long Distance, serving about 5,600 subscribers, and a Competitive Local Exchange Carrier (CLEC) with approximately 600 customers, supported by a telecommunications switch in Lexington, Kentucky.

Inter Mountain Cable operates WPRG, its local access television channel, and is affiliated with regional radio stations WXLR, WXKZ, and WIFX, a 50,000-watt high-definition station serving Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia. These stations are owned and managed by Adam Gearheart, grandson of Paul R. Gearheart and son of Paul D. Gearheart.

PDNS, LLC, owned by Paul D. Gearheart and Susan Schmoldt, oversees Mikrotec Internet Services and MTS. Mikrotec serves approximately 3,000 customers across 56 Kentucky counties and parts of three states, supported by network operations centers in Harold and Lexington, Kentucky. PDNS also operates a global data center and a 24/7 U.S.-based call center serving clients nationwide, including major hotel chains.

Gearheart Communications also holds a 20% ownership stake in East Kentucky Network, which operates a 350-mile redundant fiber ring connecting independent telephone companies throughout Eastern Kentucky and owns Appalachian Wireless.

Additionally, Gearheart Fiber delivers high-speed fiber internet to communities across Eastern Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia—continuing a legacy of reliable, locally focused connectivity.

With Gearheart Broadband, you can rely on consistent internet speeds that align with your selected plan during normal use, except in the case of unexpected service interruptions. Performance may vary due to factors such as your router’s condition and placement, the time of day, and the number of devices connected to your network. Even so, your service is designed to deliver reliable speeds in accordance with our service guarantees and usage policies.

What kind of data limits should I expect for Gearheart Broadband?

Gearheart Broadband and Gearheart Fiber plans with speeds of 1 Gig or higher include unlimited data, giving you the freedom to stream, game, work, and connect without worrying about data caps or overage charges. These plans are ideal for high-usage households with multiple connected devices, remote work needs, or frequent streaming and gaming.

Lower-tier Gearheart Broadband plans include a 1,500-gig monthly data allowance, which comfortably supports everyday activities such as browsing, email, streaming, and video calls. If your household exceeds the included data allowance, an overage fee of $2.50 per additional 50 gigs will apply.

For customers who want extra flexibility and added peace of mind, Data XL is available on all Gearheart Broadband tiers. Data XL provides an expanded or unlimited data option, helping you avoid overage charges and ensuring your internet usage keeps up with your lifestyle.

How do I use email filtering?
  • Gmail
    • Go to Gmail and click the gear icon > See all settings.
    • Click Filters and Blocked Addresses > Create a new filter.
    • Set conditions (e.g., From, Subject, Has the words, etc.).
    • Click Create filter, then choose an action (e.g., Skip Inbox, Apply label, Delete).
    • Click Create filter again to save.
  • Outlook
    • Click the Settings gear > View all Outlook settings.
    • Go to Mail > Rules.
    • Click Add new rule.
    • Give it a name, then set conditions and actions.
    • Click Save.

Do you have parental controls and filter?

Yes! 

Gearheart TV: Intelligent technology that suggests shows and movies based on your personal preference. Plus, up to five profiles can be set up with Gearheart TV for the entire family. Create a PIN from inside the Gearheart TV app to enable parental controls. When on, the PIN must be entered each time mature content is played.
