Gearheart Communications traces its roots back to 1953, when the Gearheart family purchased the Roberts/Olga Telephone Company, which served just 72 customers using crank telephones. From those humble beginnings, the company has grown into a regional telecommunications provider serving more than 40,000 subscribers across parts of three states and six counties in Kentucky. Today, Gearheart Communications and its related companies employ more than 165 dedicated team members.

Coalfields Telephone & Broadband Company provides service to over 7,000 landline telephone and DSL customers in portions of Pike and Floyd counties in Kentucky.

Founded in 1965, Inter Mountain Cable serves approximately 25,000 households across six counties in Kentucky, Mingo County, West Virginia, and Buchanan County, Virginia. Inter Mountain Cable also operates several divisions, including Coalfields Long Distance, which serves about 5,600 subscribers, and a Competitive Local Exchange Carrier (CLEC) serving approximately 600 customers. The CLEC operates a telecommunications switch located in Lexington, Kentucky.

Inter Mountain Cable also operates WPRG, a local access television channel affiliated with regional radio stations WXLR (Harold/Pikeville), WXKZ (Prestonsburg/Paintsville), and WIFX, a 50,000-watt high-definition station serving Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia. These radio stations are owned and managed by Adam Gearheart, grandson of Paul R. Gearheart and son of Paul D. Gearheart.

PDNS, LLC, owned by Paul D. Gearheart and Susan Schmoldt, operates two primary divisions: Mikrotec Internet Services and MTS. Mikrotec Internet Services serves approximately 3,000 customers across 56 counties in Kentuckyand portions of three states, supported by network operations centers in Harold, Kentucky, and on Winchester Road in Lexington, Kentucky. PDNS also operates a data center managing servers for customers worldwide, along with a 24/7 U.S.-based call center serving clients nationwide, including major hotel chains.

Gearheart Communications also holds a 20% ownership interest in East Kentucky Network (EKN). EKN owns a 350-mile redundant fiber ring connecting independent telephone companies throughout Eastern Kentucky to Winchester, Kentucky, and is also the owner of Appalachian Wireless.

In addition, Gearheart Fiber delivers high-speed fiber internet services to communities across portions of Eastern Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia, continuing the company’s long-standing commitment to reliable, locally driven connectivity.
